Palmar View of the Left Hand

Media: Procreate, Adobe Illustrator

Audience: Educated Lay Audience

2022

The objective of this painting was to show the anatomy of the hand in a non-conventional point of view.

To display the accurate anatomy of the hand, I researched through various atlases, looked at dissection of hands and a utilized 3D atlas to study the layers of the muscles and sheaths of the hand.

Let's breakdown the thought process!

I started with different gestural hand sketches to choose from. Then, I researched and roughly laid out the locations of the muscles, bones and sheaths.

I showed each finger with a different layer. For example, one with just the bone, another with the sheath and more superficial layers. I referenced back to my rough outline as I started my final rendering.

By looking at 3D and 2D atlas, I had to accurately make sure I started with the most deep muscles of the hand. I used the conventional colour schemes seen in anatomy for this illustration.

Some muscles were not visible due to another muscle overlaying the other, thus I cut the muscle to show the deeper muscle. This was similarly done for sheaths.

The final drawing before revisions came together from the addition of the arteries, veins and nerves!
